The Oscar 2024 nominations, full of snubs and surprises, are making waves today. Leading the charge is “Oppenheimer,” a Hollywood blockbuster, with a stunning 13 nominations, closely followed by “Poor Things” with 11. This year’s Oscars, the 96th, highlight a year dominated by big-screen hits, including the phenomenon of “Barbie” and Christopher Nolan’s epic World War II film. Both have been major successes globally, raking in millions and becoming Hollywood blockbusters.

The announcement brought its share of unexpected outcomes. Notably missing from the best director category is Greta Gerwig for “Barbie,” although she and Noah Baumbach received nods for the film’s adapted screenplay. Margot Robbie, who both starred in and produced the best picture nominee “Barbie,” also missed out on an acting nomination. Ryan Gosling, nominated for his role as Ken in “Barbie,” expressed significant disappointment over these snubs.

Past Oscar winner Leonardo DiCaprio, who starred in “Killers of the Flower Moon,” another Hollywood blockbuster, was also overlooked for an acting nomination this year.

On a historic note, Lily Gladstone, DiCaprio’s co-star, is the first Native American nominated for best actress. America Ferrera earned a best supporting actress nomination for her role in “Barbie,” a turnaround from her Golden Globe snub. Justine Triet joins the ranks as the eighth woman ever nominated for best director, thanks to her work on “Anatomy of a Fall.” Below is the full list of this year’s Oscar nominees:
